Munich Volkstheater

The stage is the heart of an event - the new Volkstheater the heart of the Schlachthofviertel in Munich. With the conversion and new construction of the Munich Volkstheater, the architects from LRO Lederer RagnarsdΓ³ttir Oei created not only a combination of old with new, but also a balance of monochrome and colourful.

A colourful spectacle not only on stage

Seen from the outside, the brick-red facade blends harmoniously into the surroundings of the old cattle yard area. The large archway creates an "arc of tension" from the listed part of the building to the new building, which allows visitors to experience the history of the site.

The Show must go on...

The stage is set and the curtain is raised for the interior of what is currently the most modern theatre in Germany: a sophisticated colour concept extends over several floors and is also set centre stage by light spots. The KEIM colours create a velvety matt surface, depth of colour and timeless elegance in the high rooms.

The architectural office LRO was inspired by the colour scheme during a visit to the Goethe House in Weimar. This was followed by colour studies on models and visualisations to finally determine the final coatings on site using sample surfaces.

In the foyer, the cloakroom and the staircase, the colours red, blue, green and yellow play the leading role and captivate the audience just as much as the actors on stage.

Awards

Quite rightly, the Volkstheater Munich joins the finalists for the DAM Prize for Outstanding Architecture in Germany 2023 and was awarded 3rd prize in the category "reactivated centres" by the Deutsches Architekturmuseumpolis.
