About this project

Alderney Lighthouse, on the North-East coast of the island of Alderney, was built by Trinity House in 1912. The lighthouse was built after a large boat ran aground in the adjacent Cats bay. The 32m high tower was painted white and black to make it more visible to shipping during daylight, this has made it a prominent island landmark.

The client, Trinity House, got in touch with KEIM following a successful refurbishment at Flat Holm Lighthouse in Cardiff using KEIM Mineral Paints.

Richard Perry, Area Business Development Manager of KEIM Mineral Paints, visited the project to review the issues with the coatings and subsequent salt damage. It was noted that there were issues with the existing coatings on the sun facing elevation, which had caused the render to crack and allowed moisture to ingress. This resulted to high amounts of salt activity on the interior walls.

It was recommended to remove all existing render and allow to dry. KEIM specified applying KEIM Universal Render at 14mm, followed by KEIM Silan 100 to provide a water repellent protection due to increased weather exposure. KEIM Royalan was used due to the location of the project and its formulation to withstand harsh weather conditions.
