The palace, built on the site of a 14th-century convent of the Order of the Humiliati and later taken over by the Jesuits who established a school there, acquired its current solid and austere appearance at the beginning of the 17th century through the work of Francesco Maria Ricchini.

In 1773, following the suppression of the Jesuit order, the Brera College became state property, and Empress Maria Theresa of Austria decided to make it the home of some of the cityโ€™s most advanced cultural institutions: in addition to the Academy of Fine Arts and the Lombard Institute of Science and Letters, also the Braidense National Library, the Astronomical Observatory, and the Botanical Garden.
