The Alcázar Theatre in Madrid
The Alcázar Theatre, located at number 20 Alcalá Street in the heart of Madrid, is one of the most iconic cultural venues in the Spanish capital. The building was originally designed by architect Eduardo Sánchez Eznarriaga, and completed by Eduardo Lozano Lardet after Sánchez Eznarriaga’s death. It opened its doors in January 1925 and has since hosted major theatrical productions, musicals, and performances.
The building preserves the characteristic appearance of the grand theatres of the early 20th century. Its elegant façade and carefully maintained interior decoration make it a living symbol of Madrid's architectural heritage.
The theatre's design combines elements of the Art Deco style with eclectic details, giving it a unique personality. The façade stands out for its elegance and symmetry, adorned with period-specific ornamentation.
Inside, the theatre is richly decorated with motifs that evoke the opulence of the early 20th century, featuring frescoes, mouldings, and chandeliers. These elements have been carefully preserved through various restorations to maintain the original essence of the space.
Restoration of the Main Façade with KEIM Mineral Paint
In 2023, a major restoration was carried out to modernize the facilities in terms of energy efficiency, accessibility, comfort, and safety, while preserving the architectural and historical value of the building. The project also included the restoration of original architectural elements that had deteriorated over time.
The main façade underwent a thorough cleaning and restoration, maintaining the original materials and colors. For this purpose, KEIM silicate mineral paints were used, ensuring complete color stability and long-lasting aesthetic beauty. KEIM Soldalit sol-silicate paint was applied to the surfaces, known for its unmatched durability in outdoor settings. The decorative features were treated with KEIM Design-Lasur in metallic tones, especially gold and bronze. Design-Lasur can be applied as an opaque coating or as a glaze and retains its metallic appearance over time.
Thanks to this restoration, the Alcázar Theatre has successfully preserved this iconic cultural landmark, merging its historical, architectural, and heritage value with the technical and comfort standards required by contemporary theatre.
