Microbiological growth on facades has unfortunately become a widespread standard on thermal insulation systems. Most of the product solutions designed to get to grips with this problem focus on biocides. But since these can only have an effect on the water balance of the organisms (water absorption and succulence), they have to be soluble in water.
Consequently, they are also successively washed away or decomposed by the effects of the weather, contaminate the environment and are only active for a limited period. Thus, products containing biocides should not be used according to a Pavlovian reflex.
Moisture is the most important precondition for the growth of algae . Dampness from dew is nowadays seen much more critically than moisture from rain. This phenomenon of condensation takes the form of small droplets of water on the facade surface. Periods in which condensation can form on account of the climatic conditions are much longer than periods of rain, especially on insulated facades. The longer the moisture remains on the surface of the facade, the faster the growth of microbial algae. Dry facades counteract this effect.

1. Reduces the formation of dew and ensures fast re-drying
Cosmic heat radiation can be buffered by increasing the thickness of the render layer. The capacity to store heat reduces the periods when the temperature falls below the dew point so that condensation only occurs over a very short period and in very small amounts.
2. Exploits the capillary forces of mineral building materials*
Exactly controlled water absorption of this AquaROYAL System design prevents the formation of condensation droplets on the facade surface. Moisture is absorbed directly by the hydrophilic silicate coating. The surface remains almost droplet-free. Moisture is buffered in the coating and final render. We call this hydroactivity. Re-drying of the individual layers of render takes place according to the active principle of the capillary action of mineral building materials at the same time the water is being absorbed during the periods of condensation.
KEIM AquaROYAL® – How it works
The hydroactive design of AquaROYAL systems is based on a precisely controlled water absorption in the sense of an increase in the water-repellency from the outside to the inside. Rain is absorbed by the hydrophilic outer coating and transported to the upper zones of the hydroactive render system. Capillary-active transport of moisture within the render layer and a high diffusion ability of the coating ensure fast re-drying. Good water protection of the reinforcing layer keeps the insulation material dry at all times, even under an extreme load. The system is protected against damp and frost damage.
Siliceous coating also reduces the tendency to become dirty. By comparison, organically bonded paints build up an electrostatic charge, thus attracting dirt particles that are integrated in the binder matrix as a result of the so-called "tack effect" through sunshine. Mineral coating systems do not suffer from this effect. Furthermore, AquaROYAL-Color also offers the familiar colour resistance and far exceeds "Class A1" in accordance with the BFS technical bulletin no. 26.
